Sustainable Travel is an interesting topic with a lot of information to learn about. Those with an interest in sustainable travel, whether that be tourism operators or travelers who want to travel sustainably, should consider taking an online sustainable travel course. There are several eco friendly travel courses available online, that can be taken by anyone and don’t require prior education. These courses vary in length meaning there are options for a variety of schedules.
Below are three courses that can be taken to learn more about sustainable travel.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council
With a wide range of courses and certificate programs, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council is a great option for tourism operators or those who desire to have a deeper understanding of sustainability within the tourism industry. One of their most popular courses is the GSTC Sustainable Tourism Course.
This course allows students to learn about the baseline standard for sustainable travel and tourism. GSTC has created international standards for sustainable certification in the tourism industry and destinations, and the course also learns about its content and case studies.
In addition, it teaches students how to make informed decisions on how to implement sustainability in their businesses and organizations. Although the course is offered in person, it can also be taken online over four weeks within an interactive environment and costs $395 US dollars to enroll.
The International Ecotourism Society
Those looking to learn the basics of eco friendly travel will want to consider taking the Introduction to Ecotourism online class by The International Ecotourism Society (TIES). This class covers the primary concepts of ecotourism, costs $65 dollars to enroll, and students have as much time as they need to complete the course.
TIES also offers additional courses from guest instructors that cover more specific topics in relation to eco tourism, such as sustainability in marine tourism and agritourism. With a mission to address the need to unite communities, conservation, and sustainable travel, TIES strives to facilitate engagement in social and environmental sustainability through education.
Coursera is an online learning platform that allows people to improve their skills and knowledge through a variety of courses from world-class universities and companies. One of the courses they offer, Sustainable Tourism- Promoting Environmental Public Health, is facilitated by the University of Copenhagen. This free course is offered multiple times throughout the year, is a beginner level, and takes approximately 14 hours to complete (students can complete it at their own pace).
It focuses on key environmental health and natural resources management challenges associated with the rapid growth of tourists in low-income countries. The course also takes a look into the problems and potentials of tourism development in small island states and highlights the challenges it places on vulnerable ecosystems.
Learning more about sustainable travel through an online course can be a very rewarding experience. By furthering one’s knowledge about eco friendly travel, sustainable choices can be made in one’s business or future travels that will reduce environmental impacts.
