The Island of Tuvalu: A Nation Going Under
The island of Tuvalu is a small country located in the Pacific Ocean currently facing a situation where it may not be habitable in the future. There are lots of reasons why this is the case- but mostly due to rising sea levels due to climate change that is eating away at the island’s shores. If you are interested in learning more about this beautiful island and the fate that it is facing, read on.
What is the Situation in Tuvalu?
Tuvalu is being threatened with erasure due to rising sea levels that are erasing its shores, putting the land, nature and people at risk. These rising sea levels are a direct impact of climate change, something that is also causing more frequent and severe weather events on the island too. Most of the island is less than 2m above sea level, with the United Nations predicting that by the year 2100, 95% could be underwater. This is a huge wake up call to the rest of the world about the impact of climate change and drives home the fact that action needs to be taken, especially when considering Tuvalu tourism. The fact that it has been suggested half the population have expressed a desire to move to Australia, shows the severity of the situation.
The Impact of Nature and Sustainable Efforts
Nature has a huge impact on the island, not only are the rising sea levels causing coastal erosion, floods and loss of habitable land, but extreme weather like king tides, cyclones and tropical storms are adverse and cause damage, as well as affecting food and crops too. Coastal mangroves play a huge role as natural barriers to the sea, but these are at risk from human activity that often takes place as a result of Tuvalu tourism, and natural degradation too.
Tuvlau is forward-thinking when it comes to sustainability, aiming for 100% renewable energy under the Tuvalu Renewable Energy project by the year 2030, and lowering emissions.
The island also takes part in a lot of coastal protection projects, such as by mangrove planting to act as a natural barrier to rising sea levels, constructing sea walls and land reclamation. These efforts all help to protect against the catastrophic effects of erosion.
What Can We Learn from This?
Ultimately, the whole world can learn from the situation in Tuvalu and really understand how tragic the effects of climate change and global warming really are. This is an island that is being threatened with destruction of its entire nation- land, people, culture, memories, homes, nature- all due to the impacts of humans on the planet. If there was ever a time to consider a Tuvalu vacation and take the time to learn about sustainable travel and how to advocate for the island, it is now.
Tuvalu is feeling the effects of climate change and global warming like no other country or nation does- and despite their forward efforts to act sustainable and preserve energy and their shores and land, rising sea levels are still threatening to wipe out the nation. As a world, we can use what is happening here to think more about living sustainably, and, importantly, travelling sustainably. If you have been considering a Tuvalu vacation and want to learn more about this special island and how to advocate for it, why not book that trip and go find out?
