How Tax for Tourists Helps Local Nature and its Community
Even without tax for tourists, destination countries or cities generate revenue from the souvenirs bought by visitors or the accommodation they provide. Unfortunately, this is challenging for foreign travelers, as countries are charging them more taxes. The lack of a single tax policy that applies to the entire country may cause headaches for international tourists. This means they will need to budget more money for this type of tax before visiting the destinations.
What is Tax for Tourists and Where is it Applied?
Tax for tourists is basically an additional cost imposed on a specific destination, usually depending on how many days you are visiting the area. It is normally calculated and applied before or during your stay. In most cases it is either added at immigration or included in your hotel bill.
The main purpose of the tourist tax is not simply to generate additional income for the destination. . It is generally used in popular tourist destinations with a high risk of overtourism, but it is not limited to well-known places. That way, it can be used to create sustainable tourist destinations for many years ahead.
Venice, for example, charges €5 per day for each visitor in addition to the nightly tourist tax, which is between €1 to €5.This means visitors now have to pay a total of €6 to €10 for each day of their stay. This helps the city to manage millions of visitors every year. The tourist tax, like natural park fees, also helps prevent the place from overtourism, especially during peak season. This way, popular destinations can become more sustainable.
Bali
With sustainability as a goal, many travelers are visiting popular destinations such as Jatiluwih, Monkey Forest, rice terraces, and many more. To preserve these sites, the Indonesian government charges a one-time tax of IDR 150.000, or around USD$10 per person per visit/arrival. You will be charged at certain checkpoints, such as airports and seaports, and must show a QR code containing the information from your voucher. It is recommended that you pay before you reach Bali, ensuring everyone has paid the tourist development tax.
The tax money will later be used to protect the Balinese customs, traditions, arts, and local wisdom, allowing for a sustainable culture in Bali. Furthermore, the funds will be used to care for nature, including addressing the mountain and sea waste crisis. Lastly, the funds will support city infrastructure improvements, such as moving air cables underground to enhance natural beauty.
United Kingdom
The most well-known tourist tax in the United Kingdom is in Manchester, where visitors are charged £1 per person per night. This tax supports the local government’s BID (Business Improvement District) and funds projects in the district.
Recently, there has been another type of tourist development tax imposed specifically for travelers who don’t need a VISA to visit the UK. It is called Electronic Travel Authorization. This works similarly to the ESTA system, but it costs £10 to apply. Considering that it is an additional cost for tourists, it is also a type of tourist tax that will benefit the community and the environment in the country. However, it will be primarily used to improve the immigration security system.
New Zealand
On October 1st, 2024, there was bad news for foreign tourists who wanted to visit New Zealand: the tourist tax was tripled to NZ$100, or around US$60. This increase is intended to boost economic growth and improve public services., while also providing a much better experience for foreign visitors.
European Union
The EU intends to impose a new tax on tourists, specifically for those from outside EU countries. The system is pretty much similar to ESTA in the United States and ETA, which was recently introduced in the UK. Non-EU travelers who don’t require a VISA must apply for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System). This costs €7 or around US$7.60, which is less than the ESTA or ETA fees. Like the others, this scheme is intended to strengthen security and prevent cross-border terrorism.
Knowing about this issue, you should research whether your destination imposes a foreign tourist tax. This way, it helps you to plan for your trip budget to those destinations. In order to respect the local community, travelers should not avoid paying taxes. Failing to pay the tourist tax may cause legal issues.
