With so much of the world struggling with over-tourism, it’s refreshing to know some destinations are doing their part to encourage sustainable tourism. Denmark is one of those nations. They’ve introduced a program named “CopenPay” which essentially offers rewards for sustainable experiences enjoyed by those on vacation in Denmark. Tourists planning a Denmark trip will be entitled to certain advantages if they opt for eco-friendly activities over those that are not.

This strategy is making headlines because it’s not preventing people from doing what they’d like to do but instead encourages them to choose the “better” option by way of reward. Participants can look at the list of active businesses and all you need to do is show them your proof of green activities on arrival to purchase from them. They’ll offer you a freebie or discount of some kind. This not only helps those embarking on Denmark travel do their part for the country and mother nature but also gives them an opportunity to enjoy activities they otherwise might not have considered – further enhancing their Denmark trip. 

So what rewards can participants expect under the “CopenPay” initiative?

Since Copenhagen is already listed as a very green city it’s no surprise that they would encourage visitors to be green too. For example, cycling is a huge part of Copenhagen’s lifestyle for most residents. So, to extend that sustainable branch to those visiting on a Denmark trip, those on vacation in Denmark could take part in litter picking in exchange for a free eclectic Go-Boat ride along their famous rivers. Now, litter picking doesn’t sound thrilling, and many people would never consider it while they’re on vacation, but when it comes to Denmark travel and enjoying what the city and nation has to offer, why not lend a hand in keeping the waterways clean, from a fun (and free) boat ride that would otherwise have cost you money? 

Expected Rewards

This is one example of how the initiative is helping those who take a vacation in Denmark enjoy the nation for much cheaper, removing financial stress of a Denmark trip, without causing detriment to the destination itself. Another example is cycling or walking to your appointment. When you choose to arrive at your destination in a green manner, you’re supporting sustainable practices loved by the city, instead of becoming touristic burdens. This could reward you with a free hot coffee or a heavily discounted museum entry as a thank you for your efforts.

There are also eco-friendly tours that visitors can book instead of their unsustainable counterparts. 

Hey Captain is a boat company that takes those enjoying Denmark travel to the waterways. This eco-friendly boat shows you the sights from the canal without harming the environment.

GreenBikeTours is a company offering guided cycling trips around Copenhagen, showing guests all the greatest sights of the city, all from their bicycles. Not a carbon emission in sight. 

Segway Cruise Copenhagen is a tour company aimed at delivering a little bit of adventure into the lives of those who take a vacation in Denmark, except this time on segways. If you’re not confident about cycling, this might be a good option for you.

So, when you visit Copenhagen for your next Denmark trip, consider embarking on green adventures to do your bit to reverse the damage that tourism can cause. You’ll likely get a free coffee for the trouble!
