Ecotourism: Problems in Mexico

Ecotourism in Mexico has grown considerably over the years, mostly due to the beautiful landscapes and environment, rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. Despite the growth of ecotourism, there are lots of problems in Mexico, mostly relating to the lack of regulation, rule enforcement, protection of landscapes, climate change and environmental degradation. All of these are challenges facing ecotourism, as this article will explore further.  

Problems Facing Ecotourism in Mexico 

The problems facing ecotourism in Mexico are caused by the influx of tourists keen to visit these ‘eco-friendly’ areas. Whilst there are benefits to having tourists in these places, they can also cause more harm than good. Here are just a few of these harmful problems: 

Environmental Degradation 

A lot of tourism in Mexico involves exploring its rich scenery and landscapes. However, with the increase of people exploring these natural areas, the increase of environmental degradation also increases. Though ecotourism is meant to benefit the local areas, too much tourism is one of the current issues in tourism in Mexico and is causing erosion from paths being overused, trees being cut down to develop facilities for tourists and disruption to the local wildlife by the presence of people. 

Lack of Regulations 

Another issue with tourism in Mexico is that there is a significant lack of regulations in place to protect the environment and natural landscape. Even if some places do have strong regulations in place, many others do not, and this lack of consistency and uniformity leads to damage in the natural environment and a drop in sustainable tourism practices. 

Deforestation 

Another one of the current issues in tourism, especially in Mexico, is deforestation.The increase of tourists means a demand for tourist infrastructure, where the only way to make room for it is to cut down trees. This causes harm to wildlife and animals in these environments, as well as affecting the carbon balance which impacts climate change. Ecotourism is about protecting the trees and these natural environments, but the problem of too many tourists exacerbates the situation of the local environment instead, with the focus shifting from conservation to destruction. 

Coral Reef Damage 

Mexico’s reefs are a popular ecotourism destination, and are a crucial part of ecosystems under the water and coastal communities. However, the increasing popularity in visiting them has led to around 80% of Mexico’s Caribbean coast suffering damages since the 1980s, mostly down to overfishing, disease brought into the area and pollution. They generate tourism income, but are crucial to the functioning of the environment too, so need to be protected. 

The problems facing ecotourism in Mexico are causing serious damage to the environment, wildlife and ecosystems. Influxes of tourists visiting sensitive ecological areas has led to a myriad of different problems that need to be monitored in order to keep them as eco-friendly spaces.
