Are Cruising Lines Going Green? Tips For an Eco Friendly Cruise

Since the past few years, the cruise industry has started to sail towards a greener horizon, with a large number of cruise operators resorting to environmentally friendly practices.

This evolution of sustainable cruising aptly reflects the growing awareness of the impact the cruise industry has on the environment and its dedication towards eco-friendly cruises.

This article will describe the strides the cruise lines have made in not only embracing eco-friendly practices, but also to provide a cruise vacation that can be as responsible as memorable.

Several well known cruise lines are leading the way by taking giant steps to be more and more environmentally sustainable. Some  trusted AAA travel partners, in particular, have even made a sizeable investment in eco-friendly fuel-efficient technologies to power their ships

Key practices for green cruises onboard and shoreside

Energy

From adventures on land to entertainment venues onboard, the use of energy when it comes to sustainability matters even in the smallest detail.

Ships are increasingly using energy-efficient appliances like LED lights and an air lubrication system that allows cruise ships to float on air. They are also using liquefied natural gas, the cleanest-burning marine fuel to generate power without producing pollutants.

Water

When it comes to conserving water, one has to be creative. Water not only allows you to cruise from one destination to another but is used for pools, waterslides to drinking water at sea.

Advanced wastewater treatment systems have been installed to minimise the discharge of pollutants in the ocean by treating sewage and wastewater to remove contamination before releasing into the sea.

Alternative energy sources

A number of cruise lines have begun exploring options for an alternative source of energy, such as solar panels or wind turbines to supplement the onboard power generation system.

These sources of renewable energy go a long way in reducing the demand for fossil fuels, which includes turn mitigates environmental impact.

Environmental certifications and partnerships

Many cruise lines make it a point to collaborate with environmental friendly organizations in order to take part in sustainability initiatives. They also strive to seek the ISO 14001.

The trend toward sustainability seems to extend to the cruise industry as well. Cruise vacation offers many advantages, so it would be wonderful if sustainable operations become more prevalent in the future. Let’s choose a green cruise for your next vacation!
